GilPharma Corp, the pharmaceutical conglomerate that manufactures the nation's most widely prescribed HIV prevention medication, announced this week that it will be the title sponsor of seventeen Pride drag brunches across the country this June, in what the company calls its "most ambitious allyship campaign yet."
The brunches, branded as "GilPharma Presents: Proud & PrEPared™," will feature bottomless mimosas, celebrity drag performers, and free company tote bags. They will not feature a reduction in the $847 monthly price tag of the medication that keeps a significant portion of the brunch's target audience alive.
"We wanted to show up for the community in a meaningful way," said GilPharma's VP of Strategic Inclusion, a straight woman named Jennifer who was hired in April and whose LinkedIn bio reads "Passionate About Diversity." When asked if lowering drug prices might be a more meaningful gesture, Jennifer smiled and said, "We have really great tote bags."
The tote bags are, reportedly, worth about $3. The company's annual revenue from the LGBTQ+ community is approximately $4.7 billion.
Drag performer and HIV/AIDS activist Penny Cillin did the math in a viral Instagram post. "Let me get this straight — and I use that word loosely," she wrote. "They're spending $200,000 on sponsored brunch to market a drug they charge us $10,000 a year for. That's like your landlord throwing you a pizza party after raising rent 40%."
The post has been shared 89,000 times. GilPharma's communications team responded with a press release titled "GilPharma's Longstanding Commitment to the LGBTQ+ Community," which mentioned the word "brunch" fourteen times and the word "affordable" zero times.
The company also announced it would be donating $50,000 to an LGBTQ+ health nonprofit — roughly the amount it earns every forty-five minutes from PrEP prescriptions alone.
Community organizer and former pharmacist Rex Script put it plainly: "We don't need a mimosa. We need to afford our medication. But if they're offering free champagne, honey, we'll take it. We're fabulous, not foolish."
The brunches will run throughout June. The drug prices will run throughout forever.
